I went with circles and chevrons. And used a scrap piece of card that I had previously been practising some distress ink sponging to cut my bubble die!
Not my best card but I hope it gives you some ideas.

I think you are being overly critical here -there's many good things happening here! Firstly the colors are great... And I also love the layout, how everything is located in the bottom of the card. I actually want to try a layout like this. So don't worry, you gave me ideas and surely for others too!
